What is a Pick Your Own Flower Community Supported Agricutlture-

A PYO flower CSA or Pick Your Own Community Supported Agriculture is a subscription based program where members pay upfront for a share of flowers and then are able to visit the farm to pick their own bouquets during the growing season.

How it works-

~Prepayment: Members purchase a share prior to planting for the upcoming season which guariantees them a portion of the farm's flower harvest

~Picking: Members visit the farm during designated times to pick their own flowers,  with helpful instructions on how to pick.

~Support for the farm:  The upfront payment helps the farm cover costs like seeds, supplies and labor ensuring the farm can thrive.

~Benefits for the member: Members get fresh, high-quality flowers, support a local farm and enjoy the experience of picking their own blooms.

Tips for maximizing enjoyment and longevity of your flower arrangements

  1. Fresh Water: Start with clean water in a vase and change it every two days to keep your flowers hydrated and fresh.

  2. Trim Stems: Cut stems at a diagonal before placing them in water to ensure better water absorption.

  3. Remove Leaves: Remove any leaves that will be below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.

  4. Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafty areas to prolong their lifespan.

  5. Use Flower Food: If provided, use the flower food provided by your CSA to extend the life of your blooms.

In addition to “official” flower food, there are several items commonly found in your home that can act as flower food to help extend the life of your blooms. Here are 3 options:

~You can use 1-2 tablespoons of sugar mixed with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in a quart of water.

~Another favorite is 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a quart of water to lower pH levels and prevent bacterial growth.
~A third trick is to crush a tablet of aspirin and add it to the water.

It’s essential to use these additives in moderation, as too much can harm the flowers. Additionally, always change the water every few days and trim the stems to ensure they can absorb the water and nutrients effectively.

  6. Rejuvenate Flowers: If flowers start to wilt, try recutting the stems and placing them in warm water for an hour to revive them.

  7. Rotate Arrangements: Rotate your arrangement daily to ensure even exposure to light and prevent bending. Simply turn the vase around so that the opposite side is now facing the sunlight.

  8. Remove Fading Blooms: Remove any fading or dead blooms to encourage the remaining flowers to thrive longer. In a mixed bouquet, some flowers will last longer than others.

  9. Keep Cool: Keep your flowers in a cool area to slow down the aging process and extend their freshness.

  10. Enjoy the Process: Lastly, enjoy the beauty of your flowers and the joy they bring to your home!
